Lesbian Connection and Lesbian Visibility

Lesbian Connection magazine is like a beacon for lesbians that’s been shining bright since way back in 1974. The magazine brings together incredible lesbians from all corners of the earth. It started with as a lesbian-feminist collective know as Ambitious Amazons.  Their goal?   To spread the word about cool lesbian events happening in their local community.  And it spread to include lesbians all over the planet.  Lesbian Connection continues to play a crucial role in these shifting political times.

I talked to Pat P, a loyal reader who has been reading the magazine Lesbian Connection since the 1970’s.  Pat said she loved the magazine originally because she knew what was going on in the Chicago lesbian community. Pat went on to say that as the publication developed, “I got to know what lesbians were thinking and doing not only in Chicago but in many other parts of the country.”

Pat P. a reader of Lesbian Connection for decades.

Also, Pat has always and continues to enjoy the comic strip by Alex Becker that is in every issue. Pat reported this helped her get a better idea of how other lesbians are thinking and feeling all across the country.

Now that Pat is getting on in years, she really appreciates the obituaries.  She said it is wonderful to read about the significant contributions lesbians have made and about the herstories of those who have lived the lifestyle. Rarely are the life partners and lesbian community involvements mentioned in traditional news outlets when printing obituaries.

She also said a favorite thing was the local contact information that she used when she visited other parts of the country.  Pat said she feels she keeps in touch with the various communities and their events, conferences and zoom events this way.

Now, fast forward to 2023, and Lesbian Connection is still rocking it! It’s like a super-special magazine where awesome lesbians (and their friends!) can share opinions, letters and stories. Close to 12,000 copies of this magazine are sent out at regular intervals, and sometimes it’s nice to have something in print!

Lesbian Connection has become this incredible guide for lesbian events, lesbian specific travel, and supporting lesbian businesses. It’s like the go-to place for all things fun and serious in the lesbian world.

Over the years, the magazine has tackled important social and environmental issues.  The policy of the editorial staff is to provide the opportunity and seek out all viewpoints, especially on controversial topics.

Elise Harmon, one of the magazine’s rock stars, calls it the heartbeat for lesbian communities. They have been THE best resource for finding out what’s happening locally all over the country and beyond. It’s not just a job for the staff; it’s a journey of spreading love, joy, and information.

These days the younger lesbians are discovering Lesbian Connection and voicing appreciation for the herstories and the wide range of information. We hope it continues to grow and attract younger lesbians as readers providing an on-going source of new opinions, letters and stories.

So, my friend, if you want to tap into history, current affairs, community, feel the energy, and stay in the loop about our incredible events and businesses, Lesbian Connection is the ticket. It’s not just a magazine; it’s a celebration of life, love, and everything lesbian!
