Legal Things to do Now

Our Rights can Change on a Dime With This Supreme Court

With this Supreme Court, any right-wing causes they want to go after is open. As we know, things change on a dime.  And this Supreme Court is cruel, not making any allowances in their abortion stance for rape, incest, or the mother’s life.  You think lesbians are going to be spared?

No matter what they said during their confirmation hearing.  And legal precedent does not matter any longer.  This Supreme Court is ruling on opinions not legal precedents.

The idea now is the Supreme Court cannot go back and make same sex marriages illegal.  But here are a few things you can do to get ready if they challenge other rights.

  1. Get married if you are thinking about it.  Your marriage probably won’t be made illegal, but any upcoming marriage might not be possible due to this Supreme Court.
  2. Make sure your will (as well as 401) is up to date with your designated beneficiaries.
  3. Make sure your power of attorney as well as health care proxy are up to date. Your local hospital can help with health care proxy information.  You don’t want your family to make decisions if you have a partner.
  4. If you are co-parenting in a same sex relationship, or any form of parenting minors, make sure you file adoption paperwork.
  5. Make sure your life insurance policy is up to date. Mmmmm you might still have that ex-girlfriend or ex-wife as the beneficiary!
  6. Same sex benefits might go out the window so start looking at options.
  7. Start getting birth certificates of your parents especially if they were born in another country. This is important if you want to relocate to another country.
