Echo’s Empowerment Oasis

Echo’s Empowerment Oasis: Biweekly Fitness Sessions Uniting Albuquerque’s Lesbian+ and Queer Women

In the heart of Southeast Albuquerque in Ridgecrest Park, a vibrant community of lesbian+ and queer women gathers every Saturday and Tuesday morning, forming a warm community of strength and unity. Echo, the driving force behind these gatherings, shares her inspiring journey and the impact it has on the community.

Echo’s fitness journey began with a college PE class named ‘Figure Control,’; sparking her interest in physical activity. However, it was the passing of her mother at 29 that ignited a deeper understanding of mortality and the importance of regular exercise. With the guidance of a personal trainer, Echo crafted a comprehensive outdoor workout routine, combining aerobic exercise and strength training.

Finding Inspiration: From Personal Loss to Community Connection

Motivated by the belief that exercise is a potent antidote to anxiety and depression, Echo sought to share her passion with others. During the pandemic-induced isolation, she turned to theater and Meetups as avenues to reconnect with her diverse community. Thus, the Le’s Move Meetup was born, attracting women of all ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels.

Echo’s sessions are not just about physical fitness; they are about empowerment and personal growth. Participants share stories of newfound confidence, improved endurance, and even progress towards lifelong dreams. Through her guidance, Echo fosters a supportive environment where women uplift and encourage each other, both during workouts and beyond.

Accessibility and inclusivity are paramount in Echo’s approach. Held in a public park, her sessions cater to individuals of all fitness levels. Echo takes the time to tailor routines to each participant’s needs, ensuring everyone can work at their own pace without fear of judgment. In this women-only space, bonds are forged, and a sense of safety and belonging flourishes.

Looking ahead, Echo envisions expanding her repertoire with activities like deep water exercises and introducing new
equipment to enhance the workout experience. With herdedication to fostering community and empowerment, the
possibilities for growth are endless.

Transitioning into the world of acting is a return to familiar territory for Echo, who grew up immersed in theater. While roles for older actors may be limited, Echo’s enthusiasm for all aspects of theater remains unwavering. Through directing and production,
she aims to uplift Lesbian+ and Queer voices and stories, ensuring representation and visibility in the performing arts.

As Pride approaches, Echo is busy planning an event in  Mother Earth to honor the resilience and humor of the Lesbian+ and Queer community throughout history. With live performances and retrospectives, the event aims to celebrate progress while raising funds for older Lesbian+ and Queer individuals in need.

  1. Hi! I was wondering if there was a way to get more information on the class? Would I need to get in contact with echo before showing up? I do have some prior health situations that have made weight lifting difficult but I have gotten a lot stronger!

  2. I have known Echo since 1983 – she has always been fun and fearless when it comes to engaging in new projects and finding new creative outlets for herself and to share with her community. I recommend anything Echo is doing!! (If I were not on the east coast, Id be there to try out the 🏳️‍🌈 exercise and empowerment program tomorrow!!!)
