Sewing as Storytelling: The Queer Hands That Wove Our History

Stitching History Archive: Lesbian Hands, Queer Threads, Living Memory

Earlier this month, artist and MFA candidate Tina Rose Rea Meister brought her moving project Soft Places to life — a gentle, deeply personal gathering that celebrated the textiles and memories of lesbian, sapphic, and women-loving-women’s homes. Participants arrived with beloved fabrics — aprons, robes, tablecloths, and well-worn towels — each holding traces of history, love, and everyday queer life. Over the course of an intimate workshop, Tina guided the group through mending, embellishing, and storytelling. The room filled with laughter, reflection, and soft conversation as each woman shared the meaning of “home” through her chosen textile.

At Lesbian Lives 2025 in New York, that same spirit of creation expanded. Together generations of queer women and creators who use thread as testimony — stitching names, moments, and symbols of lesbian resilience into fabric. Part art, part protest, and part meditation, their work reclaims a practice once dismissed as “domestic” and turns it into a quiet form of resistance — one that binds us to the women who came before and those still dreaming freedom into being.

Recordings and written reflections from Soft Places were later sewn directly into the fabrics, transforming ordinary household items into a living archive of lesbian memory and care. Together, these projects — one intimate, one historical — form a tapestry of tenderness, resistance, and belonging, honoring every expression of identity.  Tina listened, interviewed, and transcribed a quote to add to each individuals textile.  The work will be displayed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the spring of 2026.
