Breanna Stewart Makes History On the Court—and Inspires Beyond It
Breanna Stewart has added another remarkable achievement to an already legendary career, becoming the first player in WNBA history to win the Commissioner’s Cup MVP Award –twice.
Stewart first earned the honor in 2021, when she led the Seattle Storm to the league’s inaugural Commissioner’s Cup championship. Five years later, she returned to center stage, delivering a commanding performance that helped the New York Liberty defeat the Las Vegas Aces 93–85 and capture their second Commissioner’s Cup title.
Stewart finished the championship game with 25 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks—a sweeping display of the skill, consistency, and leadership that have made her one of the defining players of her generation.
The victory also gave Stewart her third Commissioner’s Cup championship. She won with Seattle in 2021 and has now been part of both Liberty championship teams, in 2023 and 2026. She is the first player to collect two Commissioner’s Cup MVP awards, while New York became the first franchise to win the Cup twice.
For lesbian and queer women, Stewart’s influence extends far beyond basketball. As an openly lesbian athlete competing at the highest level of her sport, she represents a kind of visibility that previous generations rarely encountered: queer love, family, professional excellence, and ambition existing openly in the same life.
Stewart and her wife, retired Spanish professional basketball player and Olympic silver medalist Marta Xargay Casademont, are raising two children, Ruby and Theo. Their family offers a joyful and public example of the many ways lesbian and queer women can build meaningful lives together.
That visibility carries particular significance in women’s sports, where queer athletes have often faced pressure to remain quiet about their relationships or separate their personal lives from their public achievements.
